A thumbnail sketch is enlarged to the piece's final size. Using this as a guide, each shape is cut by hand from wood veneer, with adjustments to color, form, and texture to achieve the right balance, color palette, and scale, ensuring each element contributes to the relationships and tensions within the composition. Each shape is individually hand-inlaid into the base veneer. A UV-resistant finish is applied to protect the surface. The finished artwork is mounted so that it floats off the wall, without being constrained in a frame.
